The Joy of Animal Interaction in Our Care and Nursing Homes

For many people, animals offer more than just companionship—they provide comfort, emotional support, and a calming presence. Many of our residents have previously owned or cared for pets, and for those living with dementia, interacting with animals can reduce anxiety and encourage meaningful social interaction.

At Monarch Healthcare, we love incorporating animal therapy into our activity programmes, whether through visits from therapy animals, pets that live in our care homes, or trips into the local community. We regularly welcome trained therapy animals into our homes, and these visits bring immense joy to our residents. Recently, we’ve enjoyed visits from a range of friendly creatures, including dogs, rabbits, guinea pigs, and even a mobile mini zoo. These interactions spark happiness and bring a sense of calm to both residents and staff.

Some of our homes are fortunate enough to have resident pets. For example, Bella, our friendly cat at Croft Care Home in Burton on Trent, is a beloved member of the household. She brightens the day with her gentle nature.

In addition to on-site animal interactions, trips into the local community offer residents meaningful experiences and a chance to connect with nature and animals. Recently, residents from Croft Care Home enjoyed a visit to Tithe Farm, a local stable in Burton on Trent, where they were introduced to the beautiful horses. This visit was made even more special by the fact that Tithe Farm is well-known to Chloe, one of our dedicated staff members. We are grateful for the warm welcome and the opportunity to enjoy such a special day.

Outside of organised activities, we are also treated to visits from staff and family members’ pets, including Ozzie, the fox red Labrador. At Monarch Healthcare, we understand the impact that animal interactions can have on our residents’ mental and emotional well-being, and we are committed to providing as many opportunities as possible to foster these special connections.
Here’s a look at some of the amazing moments we’ve shared.
